Heart of Madder Natural Dye Retreat on November 16, 2024

Heart of Madder Natural Dye Retreat on November 16, 2024

from $75.00

I'm excited and honored to be collaborating with wonderful plant people, Kendra Rivers and Lauren Kemple, immersing ourselves in the world of madder.
We'll dye garments to take home, make ink to paint or draw with, experience the medicine of the roots.
While we get our hands dirty cleaning, chopping and preparing the madder, we'll explore the history of madder, how it is tangled up with imperialism, slavery, and the invisible work of women. We'll share stories and dig into questions such as how can we engage with madder (and other plants) not just for the craft of it, but as way of stepping more deeply into relationship with the land, each other and ourselves?
This is sure to be a rich taste of community, nourishment and beauty.

Join plant conspirators Lauren, Sunny and Kendra for a daylong retreat exploring the heart of Madder and go home with a naturally dyed garment of your choice. This full day of hands-on creative respite will include natural dyeing, medicine making, storytelling and deep connection with the versatile plant that is Madder.

An abundance of fresh roots will be available to wash, cut, extract and make into dye, medicine and ink. You will learn scouring and mordanting techniques to prepare garments for dyeing and experience naturally dyeing in a vat with the fresh roots. End the day feeling connected and informed with artisan dyed garments in your hands. All materials will be provided.

Madder root takes 3 years to reach maturity. Due to a confluence of 2 dye gardeners changing location, a substantial amount of mature madder root became available from 2 local gardens. Join us for this rare opportunity for a big workshop to dig into the heart of Madder.
